Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment

The Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment is an assessment that measures the level of difficulty at which a student is able to read fiction and nonfiction texts. Students read short books that range in difficulty. Beginning readers would begin at a level A book (easiest), advancing up the alphabet to those for extremely advanced readers (Z). Each level is slightly harder. As well, each assessment book is accompanied by short assignments that are designed to show what a student can read independently. Information students provide through their reading and responding will guide how a teacher will meet each student's needs as a reader. Some of the reading areas a teacher can support a student based on the information provided by the assessment include:
  • Comprehension within, beyond, and about the text
  • Writing about reading
  • Fluency
  • Phonemic awareness
  • Letter names
  • Early literacy behaviors
  • Phonics and word analysis
  • High frequency word reading
  • Vocabulary knowledge
